OUR NAME'S SAKE

In May of 1975, Dan Hoffman was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps stationed in the fareast. An American merchant ship, the S.S. MAYAGUEZ and her crew were seized by elements of the Cambodian Navy and held off a small island called Koh Tang which is 35 miles off the Cambodian Vietnam border in the Gulf of Thailand. In what is often called the last battle of the Vietnam War, Marines landed under heavy fire on Koh Tang Island to recover the MAYAGUEZ and her crew. It was a fierce battle, the last 41 names on “The Wall”, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are from those killed on the MAYAGUEZ Operation. Dan Hoffman, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with “V” for Valor for his actions that day. He also was given by his fellow Marines, the rare honor of a combat related nickname. “Koh Tang”.
